Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

a common disorder characterized by brief, repetitive interruptions of breathing during sleep (The left above image shows this obstructed airway in red)

This occurs when the tongue and soft palate tissues of the airway collapse onto the back of the throat, causing air flow to decrease. In sleep apnea, your breathing stops or gets very shallow while you are sleeping. Apnea events can last 10-20 seconds. These pauses or events can occur 23 to 30, up to 75 times and hour. Sleep Apnea and Snoring are overlooked and left untreated. Sleep Apnea can lead to other serious medical conditions like stroke, heart attack and other medical problems.

CPAP Machine

A CPAP machine, which stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, is beneficial for all instances of Obstructive Sleep Apnea. It is particularly indicated for severe cases of this condition. Although CPAP devices are highly effective, a significant number of patients find them uncomfortable and ultimately discontinue their use.

In cases of Mild to Moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea, a Dental Oral Appliance may be employed. Additionally, these oral appliances can be utilized by patients with Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea who are unable to tolerate their CPAP machines. An illustration of a Dental Oral Appliance designed to facilitate airway opening is provided below, highlighted in blue.
